While hundreds of American boys die each month in Viet Nam, some guys party in college. After all, a college deferment is all that is required to stay in a frat house at USC as opposed to a sleeping bag in a rice patty in Cambodia--as if we were really even in Cambodia.
Of course not all guys can get into college since they never opened a book in high school. But American commerce always fills a void, so in the 1960’s dozens of colleges open that accepted any student--who can pay the tuition.
A small, patriotic town in Nebraska is proud of its young men serving in Viet Nam. They see a group of rich kids from the big cites back east not only invading their town with Corvettes, Porsches and Mercedes but also challenging their view of the world and the war. Change can be tough.
