Scarlet Oaks
In the spring of 2014, the English Department at Scarlet Oaks School in Cincinnati titled the last semester of the school year “Last at Bat” as the book, by popular demand of the students themselves, had been selected as their “Senior Read”, and in fact, the final exam was based on the book. To further this project, Mark had autographed over 300 books that were presented to the students.
On May 6, 2014 Mark was privileged to be their special guest where he spoke for the entire day to six English classes. When he asked why this particular book had been chosen, the head of the English Department said “Because the story touched on far more than baseball and got into social, racial, and ethical issues as well as providing both a baseball and romantic backdrop.” Many of these young people had never owned a book, but had developed the love to read because of his words, is, and will remain an unequaled honor for Mark.
